Everything you should know about a secondary school

Published on

If you went through high school or watched any TV at all, you know that secondary school is not a bed of roses. Students worry about fitting in, making new friends, failing classes, and getting lost in corridors' maze. On the other hand, parents worry their kids might get bullied, get into drugs, make poor choices, and even fail.

However, history shows that a vast majority of secondary students come out the other end just fine. Sure, there will be some struggle, especially if you are a bookworm and an introvert, but it all makes them stronger.

Whether you are the student or a parent preparing for your child to join higher secondary school come next year, there are a few things you should know;

1. Rules and regulations

    Every school has rules they abide by, and the student should strive to know them right from the start. For example, how do they wear their uniform? Must students wear a tie? Does the length of the skirt matter? How about hairstyles? What are the disciplinary measures?

    2. What's the code on bullying?

      Bullying is the biggest cause of depression among secondary school students. You must find out where the school faculty and leadership stand on that issue and what they do to prevent it.

      3. Performance

        While the responsibility of doing well in school lies on your child, the school also plays a significant role. Find how the school has been performing the last few years, both academically and extracurricular activities.

        Secondary school is a vital part of a child's life. It's where they start making the foundation of their future career and learn more about themselves. Choosing the right school, therefore, can be the difference between a thriving child and a traumatized one.
